We took Chicago school kids from learning about fire safety in coloring books to an immersive, first-of-it’s-kind VR experience. We began by researching the most common two-flats in Chicago and built a home in which students could make choices to escape a fire. To further enhance the experience, we worked with experts in multiple fields including the Chicago Fire Department to record the “voices” of the firefighters, The Illinois Fire Services Institute to get the "look and feel” of the flames right, and the Early Education Department at the University of Illinois to ensure the experience was educational without being frightening.
